Totem is made to reduce your screen time. We don't need any of your data for that, so we don't collect it. This applies to the Totem app on iPhone and on Android.
## What we don't do
- We don't collect personal data
- We don't have accounts, so you don't need to sign up for anything
- We don't use trackers, ads or analytics software
- The app sends nothing to us or to anyone else. The Android app doesn't even have internet access
- We don't share anything with third parties, because there is nothing to share
## What the app stores on your device
Everything stays on your phone and never leaves your device:
- **Your Totem's unique code.** When pairing, the app reads the serial number of the NFC chip in your Totem, so it can later recognise that your Totem is being tapped.
- **Your modes.** The names you choose yourself, such as Work or Sleep, with their icon and schedule.
- **Which apps you block.** On iPhone, Apple stores this selection encrypted; we can't see which apps you've chosen. On Android, the app stores the technical names of the apps you choose (for example com.instagram.android).
- **Your focus history.** When a session started, how long it lasted and which mode was active, for the statistics in the app.
- **The places in your schedules**, only if you set up a location-based schedule: the name, coordinates and radius of the place you choose, and when you arrived there.
- **Your strict mode PIN**, stored only as an encrypted check value: on iPhone in the keychain, on Android protected by a key from your phone's hardware security. The PIN itself is never stored.
- **How long a block lasts** and how many emergency unlocks you've used this month.
If you delete the app, this data disappears from your device. On Android it is deliberately excluded from backups.
## Blocking apps
On iPhone, Totem uses Apple's Screen Time features (Family Controls and Managed Settings). These ask for your permission once.
On Android, Totem uses an accessibility service. It only lets the app see which app you open, so it can shield a blocked app. Totem doesn't read screen content, text or messages. To show the block screen, the app uses the permission to display over other apps.
All of this happens on your own device; no information about your app usage is sent to us, to Apple or to Google.
## Location
Only if you use a location-based schedule does the app ask for location access ("Allow all the time"). Your phone then signals when you arrive at or leave the chosen place, even when the app is closed. This runs through your phone's location features (Apple Location Services or Google Play services).
Totem doesn't keep a location history, only whether you are currently at one of your chosen places. When you search for a place, the app uses your phone's address search, which has your query processed by Apple or Google.
## NFC
The app only reads your Totem's serial number, to check that it is your Totem. Nothing is written to the chip and no other information is read.
## Your rights
Because we don't store any data about you, there is nothing to view, correct or delete. Want to erase everything? Delete the app from your device.
## Changes
If we change this policy, we'll post the new version on this page with a new date at the top.
