## Getting started

**1. Pair your Totem.** Open the app and hold your phone against your Totem. The app then remembers which device is yours.

**2. Create a mode.** Work, Sleep, Relax — or make up your own. For each mode you choose which apps get blocked.

**3. Activate.** Pick a mode and tap your Totem. The blocked apps can no longer be opened.

**4. Deactivate.** Tap your Totem again. That's the only way to stop — which is exactly the point.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does Totem work on Android?**

Yes. Totem works on both iPhone and Android.

**Which phone do I need?**

An iPhone running iOS 17 or later, or an Android phone with NFC running Android 12 or later.

**Where do I hold my phone?**

On an iPhone the NFC antenna is at the top of the back; on most Android phones it's in the middle of the back.

If it doesn't work right away, move it slowly back and forth.

**The app says Screen Time access failed (iPhone).**

Turn on Screen Time in Settings → Screen Time. Without Screen Time, Totem can't block apps. If it keeps failing, delete the app and reinstall it; the permission prompt is only shown once.

**I lost my Totem while a block is running.**

During the block, tap the Totem image in the app three times. You have five emergency unlocks per month.

**What is strict mode?**

While a block is running you can't delete apps from your device, including Totem itself. It can only be switched off with your PIN. On iPhone, the PIN is kept if you reinstall the app.

**I forgot my PIN.**

Get in touch with us. For security reasons we can't look it up for you — it's only stored, encrypted, on your own device.

**Can I use more than one Totem?**

At the moment you pair one per phone. You can switch, though: unpair the current one in Settings and pair another. The other way round does work: one Totem works with several phones, so you can share it with your family.

**Can Totem see which apps I use?**

No. Apple only gives the app encrypted references to your selection. We can't see which apps you block, and nothing is sent to our servers.

Not happy? Send your Totem back undamaged within 30 days and you'll get your money back. The hardware comes with a two-year warranty.
